    1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  2. 2He was with God in the beginning.
  3. 3Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.

  5. 5The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
  6. 6There came a man who was sent from God. His name was John.
  7. 7He came as a witness to testify about the Light, so that through him everyone might believe.
  8. 8He himself was not the Light, but he came to testify about the Light.
  9. 9The true Light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.
  10. 10He was in the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him.
  11. 11He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
  12. 12But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—
  13. 13children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God.

    5In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah, and whose wife Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron.
  20. 6Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and decrees of the Lord.
  21. 7But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well along in years.
  22. 8One day while Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,
  23. 9he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
  24. 10And at the hour of the incense offering, the whole congregation was praying outside.
  25. 11Just then an angel of the Lord appeared to Zechariah, standing at the right side of the altar of incense.
  26. 12When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and gripped with fear.
  27. 13But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.
  28. 14He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth,
  29. 15for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He shall never take wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.
  30. 16Many of the sons of Israel he will turn back to the Lord their God.
  31. 17And he will go on before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”
  32. 18“How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “I am an old man, and my wife is well along in years.”
  33. 19“I am Gabriel,” replied the angel. “I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
  34. 20And now you will be silent and unable to speak until the day this comes to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their proper time.”
  35. 21Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he took so long in the temple.
  36. 22When he came out and was unable to speak to them, they realized he had seen a vision in the temple. He kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak.
  37. 23And when the days of his service were complete, he returned home.
  38. 24After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. She declared,
  39. 25“The Lord has done this for me. In these days He has shown me favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
  40. 26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
